Sen.John Thune(R-SD) was selected as the next Republican leader of the U.S. Senate, succeedingMitch McConnell.
First elected in 2004, Thune has most recently served as minority whip.

McConnell announced earlier this year that he was stepping down from his leadership post after 17 years.
He plans to remain in the Senate through the end of his term in 2027.
