Italian directorNanni Morettiwas reported to be in intensive care in stable condition Wednesday evening after suffering a heart attack earlier in the day.
Italian media reported that theDear DiaryandThe Sons Roomfilmmaker had fallen ill in the afternoon and been taken to Romes San Camillo Hospital, where he was operated on immediately.
Moretti previously suffered a heart attack last October, which forced him to cancel an appearance at the premiere of Alessandro Cassigoli and Casey Kauffmans dramaVittoria,which he produced under the banner of his company Sacher Film.

He was seen most recently at the Bari International Film & TV Festival in southernItalyin March for a retrospective of his work.

One of Italys best known directors, Moretti has premiered nine films in Competition at theCannesFilm Festival, winning Best Director forDear Diaryin 1994 and the Palme dOr forThe Sons Roomin 2001.
In more recent years, he won the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury forMia Madrein 2015 and was last at the festival withA Brighter Tomorrowin 2023, his last film to date.
