Members of the public had been waiting since yesterday evening to greet the royals, keen to show their support after what has been a trying year for the family, with Charles announcing that he was undergoing treatment for cancer, and Kate revealing that she was having chemotherapy.

However, she and her husband skipped the traditional Christmas lunch for royal family and their staff a fortnight ago.
She hosted a carol service which was filmed at the beginning of December, in which she reflected on her challenging year, and spoke of the importance of empathy.
King Charles beleaguered brother Andrew was absent, having been excused from the familys Christmas following recent revelations that he had befriended a Chinese diplomat who was later named as a spy (a claim the man denies).
