And the campaign was the old Biden campaign.

The superstructure was there, so we had been working with them on Biden.

The crowd of mourners cheered.

Im going to stay back.

Did this make you close up, keep it all inside?

I did learn for myself that I dont want to be open.

Donald Trump

I dont want to make myself vulnerable, Trump told Walters, who he considered a friend.

Its about a case we have.

Its a civil rights case or something, and theyre all telling is, Give up.

Sign a decree, and all of that…I followed your career.

You seems a bit crazy like I am, and you stand up the the establishment.

Can I come see you?

I said, sure.

Deadline talked to Kirk about the making ofThe Choice and what he hopes viewers take away from the project.

What were some of the major takeaways that surprised you?

MICHAEL KIRK:The first was that she became a prosecuting attorney.

You are the child of a mother and father in Berkeley, California in the 60s and 70s.

Really something that her mother didnt want.

She kept saying the best way to affect change, from her perspective, is from inside the system.

Inside the system there were hardly any Black women in positions of authority, surrounded by white cops.

Its a fascinating decision on her part.

By contrast, Harris seems to have a much more smoothly run presidential campaign.

You have a brand new person who doesnt know anything about the job.

She only was a senator for almost two years.

DEADLINE: How did you approachDonald Trumps story given that he has been profiled inThe Choicetwice before?

KIRK: Everything changed.

We have made about eight films about Trump over the course of his presidency.

We reemphasized it, went back to the relationship with his brother Freddie.

KIRK:Well, thats it, isnt it?

I have this quote I always hang here.

A president can bring to the job no more than the lessons of his own life.

I dont know who wrote it or said it, Ive had it for years.

But every time I makeThe ChoiceI pull it out and hang it up.

So when you say the names Fred Trump, Roy Cohn, Roger Stone, Steve Bannon.

Where are we going here?

Theres a certain similarity to all of that that you just say, I get it.

DEADLINE: What impressions do you think viewers will have from each candidate that they didnt have before?

They all say what you see is what you get with Trump.

Harris, I think theres a lot of things about her that she doesnt bring forward.

She never plays the race card.

Thats the view of her sister Maya.

Not a lot of personal things there.

She is not an open book in that sense.

Thats not who she wants to be.

The Choicedebuts this evening on PBS stations and streaming platforms.
