Zahn McClarnon as Lt. Joe Leaphorn in the Season 3 finale of AMC’s Dark WindsAMC

DEADLINE:So, how is Season 4 going?

ZAHN McCLARNON:Everythings smooth.

Were down here in Santa Fe, New Mexico, a little bit chilly.

Kristin Dolan at the season 2 premiere of “Anne Rice’s Interview With The Vampire” held at The McKittrick Hotel on April 30, 2024 in New York City.

It was snowing like crazy down here a few days ago.

Now its 65 degrees and its beautiful, and everythings going smooth.

Were into Episode Three.

We just started today, so weve shot two of the episodes already, and everythings going smooth.

ERICA TREMBLAY:Im in Santa Monica, California, where we have our writers room.

Were actually completing our final week of the room.

Its kind of good momentum to keep trudging through the next season.

McCLARNON:You know what were trying to do with the show.

I did want to add that we dont represent the Navajo people.

DEADLINE:That is so important to you …

McCLARNON:It is.

That we get to re-educate people about a culture and the values of that culture is important.

So much there, capturing the whole season in many ways.

Its all you, direct to camera, not saying a word, how was that scene for you?

It was kind of a really cool moment for me.

You know, I love Deanna.

Shes a wonderful human being.

Were good friends, but at that moment, I just realized how much Joe loved his wife.

So, I took that, that emotion, into the scene with the tape recorder.

I couldnt stop crying.

But Im glad that John used the more stoic kind of version that take than the blubbering.

But it was, it was a beautiful moment.

I hope one day I can forgive him.

We knew in writing it that Joe would be listening to it.

I was crying as I was writing.

That youre confessing on the page as well.

Were always thinking its the end game where were going to be in the finale and everythings driving there.

You have to wrap out all of the mystery elements that the people come and watch week after week.

DEADLINE:Erica, a lot of space there, but a lot of minefields too, no?

TREMBLAY:Oh yeah.

Yeah, were always driving to that in the finale.

She cant, but she can make him have to listen to this.

Which is, was, was her way of getting some sort of justice.

We knew that that was the answer.

DEADLINE:So, will we see Emma Leaphorn, Deanna, return in Season 4?

It was literally and figuratively quite the trip for Joe, unearthed a lot of pain.

How was that for you as an actor?

TREMBLAY:You know, Zahn and I have known each other for a while now.

We worked together onReservation Dogs.

Zahn was such a big cheerleader to bring me on to the first season of the show.

And I think walking into this episode … when we broke it in the room, it was harrowing.

DEADLINE: yo dont think Im stupid or insensitive, but how was it harrowing?

It was just incredible to get to work with Zahn.

DEADLINE:How did you do build that protection for yourself and others?

It was a cathartic cry thats like, okay, we did it.

Now, lets edit it and get this thing done.

DEADLINE:Zahn, with that, where is Joe for you at the end of Season 3?

Which leads into Season 4 and the decisions he makes.

TREMBLAY:Leaphorn transformation this season.
