Cillian Murphy Q&A on ‘Small Things Like These’

(This interview has been condensed and edited for clarity.)

Its all about the subtext and whats not spoken, and the silence and all of that stuff.

And its so bloody powerful because of what Emily does in that scene.

‘Peaky Blinders’ Season 6

Whats your perspective on it now?

MURPHY:It was just nice to come back and talk about it again, you know?

So Im really, really excited for audiences to sit down.

And the reaction here from the press has been really, really strong.

So were all thrilled.

DEADLINE: You have a relationship with Netflix viaPeaky Blindersand your next project,Steve.

What is the significance of a theatrical release on this film?

Why was that important?

I mean, it cant always be the case.

And weve seen that when weve tested it, and we saw that in Berlin.

I think its more suited to theatrical than to streaming.

MURPHY:I hope so.

I hope people will talk about it.

Because, like, what the hell happens when we go to black?

What happens after that?

And I think everyones gonna have a different point of view.

Everyones gonna have a different perspective.

I think we still need people to do that.

For example, I was reading recently about the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in Canada.

Its the same story.

So to say that its peculiar to Ireland is incorrect.

The same story, same things have been uncovered in Belgium, where Tim [Mielants] is from.

And theres lots of different parallels it’s possible for you to draw with stuff thats happening politically today.

But again, I dont want to be too prescriptive about it.

I just want people to take what they will.

And people do, people come back with lots of different reactions or responses.

And I think its always important to challenge everything.

For me, its very much the creative side.

Alan is much more the business side of things, and does the heavy lifting there.

And then I think thats neither.

Thats not very satisfying.

At least take a big swing is my feeling.

It should still be the same thing thats driving the process.

So thats been the thing that Ive tried to hold on to.

DEADLINE: Do you feel like you achieved what you set out to do so far?

MURPHY:Well, I certainly feel like weve made the film that we wanted to make withSmall Things.

DEADLINE: How is Big Things doing since you officially launched?

Are you being super solicited?

And how important isSmall Thingsto Big Things?

MURPHY:Its the first film for the production company, so it means a great deal.

Its a beloved book, so it means a great deal.

Were really excited to put it out and see what the audience think.

I think we want to keep the quality level high, as high as we can.
