Its brain-muddling, and also so cool and interesting, the meat of the story.

DEADLINE:How are you?

JOE LOCKE:Im good.

Ive been feeling really like, end of a holiday sad.

Thats how Ive been feeling today, being like, Why am I so down?

It should be a happy day.

Because its over, its like, Oh, back to real life.

LOCKE:Theres nothing cooler than wearing the superhero costumes.

You walk in and you just feel cool.

Everyones like looking at you, and your cape swishes.

I just felt so cool.

DEADLINE:I think I saw some runes on his red cape.

Is that something you might talk about the details?

LOCKE:Yeah, theres runes on it.

The attention to detail is amazing.

So its almost like the road kit turns slowly into the Wiccan kit.

LOCKE:Billy and Agatha have such an interesting relationship throughout the whole show.

Shes just helped him find his brother and give his brother a life.

Its subtlyWizard of Oz-esque in that kind of way, but he doesnt know that yet.

DEADLINE:I have so many questions about that too.

DEADLINE:I did see a few theories of people wondering if that were the case.

I also just saw something about the line when Agatha says You and your mother have the same tell.

LOCKE:Theres so many.

LOCKE:That scene was such a complicated one for me.

I think it actually changed in post, Im pretty sure, because the Is this how Nikki died?

the telepathic line to Agatha, was a thing we added in post.

I think that she would have, but I think you gotta tell the audience that story.

They make them into heroes in some way, but our show doesnt do that.

Shes still a serial killer who murders people and cares about herself more than anyone.

I like that we keep that.

That does not change there the end.

You see more layers to her.

You see why she does things, but shes still a villain.

Did you write anything in there?

Can you tell us about whats in there?

Why was it smudged like that in in episode eight?

LOCKE:The spellbook, almost like Billy, goes through a journey in the show.

All of the things I was reading out were written in there.

It should have got my screentime because the doodles were incredible.

I should have stolen one.

I should have taken one and I didnt.

Its like, Okay, now you know your stuff.

This trial is not about using the guides, youve got to get what you want.

DEADLINE:So that trial, is it Rios trial, or is that a trial for Billy?

How did you approach that?

Wed all read the scripts.

LOCKE:I think it helps that he doesnt know hes so powerful.

He doesnt know hes capable of doing something.

The thing that I tried to balance the most was the differences between his likeness and his darkness.

In that gray area of Is he bad?

I dont know if he is bad or good.

It just adds so many layers of fun and ambiguity.

DEADLINE:Have you at all spoken with Elizabeth Olsen since the show came out, since getting cast?

Have you heard from her at all?

LOCKE:I havent.

Ive like heard from her through people, but weve never spoken.

I obviously would absolutely love to.

DEADLINE:Has anyone else in the big Marvel wings of cast members reached out?

Obviously withHeartstopper, you are so famous now, but this is a whole other level too.

LOCKE:Yeah, Its very strange.

Its not, its not our child anymore.

Our childs gone off into the world and we have no say about it.

LOCKE:Me and Jack have spoke a lot about this.

We always saw it as the combination of it all.

Its the combination of Wanda being dead, the combination of me fiddling with the spell.

If I wanted to get rid of her, she could be gone.

And thats when she, like, changes the tack, and its like, Oh shit.

This kids actually like, maybe he did loosen the jar.

Hes able to get rid of me now.

Im pretty sure its a combination of all the things that cause it.

I know some people thought you could be Nicholas.

Did you attempt to weave that into your portrayal at all?

LOCKE:We definitely wanted to play with the idea that that Billy could have been Nicholas.

It doesnt even necessarily matter that hes not.

There is that maternal, mother-son bond between them.

Its a weird and toxic one, but it is definitely there.

And she goes Youre only one who thinks that.

I just think its really beautiful.

DEADLINE:Did you have a favorite trial or costume throughout the show on the road?

Like, you cant ever get cooler than that.

This is one of my greatest achievements, they made three [versions].

Ive just got too big of a bum.

It wasnt really my bum it was because the harness and stuff.

But Im gonna say its because my arse is too big.

So that made it complicated in that way, but also it was the coolest thing ever, yeah?

Like, being sat superhero costume and being flung around on wires is just the coolest thing ever.

DEADLINE:I know you had a bit of say on the decoration in Billys room.

Was that kind of all planned out?

Did you add anything in that scene?

What was that like?

LOCKE:That was definitely planned out.

They had specific beats they wanted to hit.

I wanted to add the cabin lights that, theyre in the corner.

I dont know if they point them out, but theyre in the corner of the room.

Everyone was hemming and hawing with the leaves from the road being from the what do you call that?

DEADLINE:The mobile?

LOCKE:Mobile, yeah was too obvious or not.

But I was like, no, its cool.

Theres all these different thoughts.

LOCKE:I think Billy would learn a lot from Doctor Strange or someone.

Hes such a young magic person who knows what theyre doing.

Obviously, in the comics, they have a connection.

So I think that would be cool, but who knows?

DEADLINE: Heartstopper-related query for you.

Have you gone to see Kit [Connor] in Romeo + Juliet?

LOCKE:I have not yet, but I am going, Im going very soon.

Your career is just starting, it seems like, and you have these big roles.

Ill always be like, a character-focused actor.

I love getting to know the characters I play.

I love, also, playing flawed people.

Perfect people are boring.

I want someone whos got flaws and does bad things.

Thats the fun bit, thats the meaty bit.

But right now, I just want a job so … Im just kidding.
